Ice Cream to Space!

View the whole press release

Last June, Purbeck Ice Cream embraced the role of intrepid scientist, and sent a fabulously delicious tub of Purbeck Ice Cream to space (well, near space).

In partnership with Chris Hillcox, a high altitude ballooning hobbyist (www.nearspacephotography.com), Purbeck Ice Cream were looking to find out if ice cream would sufficiently freeze in space in order to reach “the perfect scoop”, in their never-ending quest to find the perfect ice cream consistency for maximum enjoyment. The tub of Purbeck Ice Cream passed through the mid stratosphere and temperatures down to minus 50 Celsius, before the intrepid tub of Purbeck Ice Cream made its way swiftly back down to earth. With two Go Pro’s, tracking electronics and a 500ml tub attached to the payload, the Purbeck Ice Cream tub was filmed on its entire journey to near space and back again, and taste tested on landing!

The Launch was broadcast live on Periscope from the farm in Kingston, Dorset, where Purbeck Ice Cream Is made, and the live tracking of the payload as it made its way up into space found the Ice Cream reached dizzying heights of 35,701ft on its 2 hour 42 minute journey!

The Ice Cream was recovered by Chris in the Liphook area, and was successfully frozen and edible! The video of the flight and recovery, including the taste test, are now available.

Purbeck Ice Cream sources their ingredients as close to our home county of Dorset as possible. Using 60% fresh Purbeck milk, 22% thick Dorset cream, British sugar and an abundance of only the best natural ingredients, with no artificial additives, added colours or nuts, it’s gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians. Everything is made on the farm with fun, love and passion by a small and friendly team, who were secretly hoping to get their space wings.

New Charity Driven Jurassic Range

View the whole press release

After 10 years in the making, Purbeck Ice Cream has released their new Jurassic Range in partnership with the Jurassic Coast Trust, to try and help raise funds for the beautiful Jurassic World Heritage Site on the Dorset Coastline.

Pete, Owner and Director of Purbeck Ice Cream, originally came up with the concept 10 years ago for what he thought was a fabulous ice cream that embraced the local coastline and rich history of dinosaurs and fossils found along the Jurassic Coast. The concept was that you could carefully dig around a Belgian chocolate dinosaur, eating all the Madagascan Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, before victoriously consuming the revealed (historically accurate) dinosaur. The other Directors Hazel and Patrick laughed at his preposterous idea and proclaimed that it would never work. Every year Pete would bring up the Dig-a-saurus, and every year Hazel and Patrick would laugh and say no.

That was until the Jurassic Coast Trust got in touch with Purbeck Ice Cream asking if they wanted to be a Lead Partner. Pete’s eyes lit up like a Christmas tree at the thought of his long mocked idea becoming a reality. Two other flavours soon joined the quickly forming range, with key relevance to the local area, and the Jurassic Range was born.

A new Range came with its own trials and tribulations. The Purbeck Team gained two dress sizes apiece from the trialling of so much chocolate and it became common to see people strutting about the office in dinosaur suits, auditioning for the role of dinosaur at the launch party. Production was thrown into carnage once it came to putting the chocolate dinosaurs into the pots, as the timings were hugely underestimated and the floor quickly became a puddle of ice cream and broken chocolate, tubs sliding innocently off the conveyor belt onto a giant pile of impatiently queueing tubs destined to join their friends on the floor as staff struggled to get lids on and tubs into boxes quick enough.

The Jurassic Range soon came together however, and was launched spectacularly at the Etches Collection in Kimmeridge, with guests, stockists press and interested parties attending. The Dig-a-saurus, Purbeck Rocks and Ammonite Bites were a roaring success, especially once it was revealed that 5p from every tub would be donated to the Jurassic Coast Trust to help conserve, protect and educate people about the Jurassic World Heritage Coastline. The tubs are ready to be rolled out into stores for the October half term, and Purbeck Ice cream hopes that the range provides as much charitable donation to the Jurassic Coast Trust as possible!

 The Dig-a-saurus Ice Cream combines the thrill of Vanilla Madagascan Ice Cream with the adventure of digging out your very own dinosaur like the archaeologists of old.

 Purbeck Rocks Ice cream incorporates Honeycombe pieces and Milk Chocolate Footprint Fossil Shapes, to symbolise the dinosaur footprints found at Keates Quarry in the Purbecks.

 Ammonite Bites Ice Cream is a Vanilla Bean Ice Cream with Milk Chocolate Fossil Ammonites and Trilobites, paying tribute to the abundance of fossils found along the Jurassic Coast from Swanage to Lyme Regis and beyond.
