Adande and Nuttalls win Refrigeration Innovation of the Year at 2011 RAC awards

Adande has clinched the refrigeration industry’s greatest innovation accolade!

Adande’s patented air-cell ® technology for retail display cabinets, jointly submitted with Alan Nuttall, was declared “truly innovative” by judges of the RAC Cooling Industry Awards.

“The fact that Adande was shortlisted in four categories of the RAC awards – unprecedented for a manufacturer of foodservice refrigeration – recognises that Adande technologies are driving change in the key areas of concern for our industry and society in general,” says Adande Chairman Nigel Bell.

The award pays testimony to the drive and determination of Adande Managing Director Ian Wood, who lead a team from Alan Nuttall, Hawco, and ECH Engineering to take the Adande patented  air-cel® from concept, through to commercial development. Adande already have patented refrigeration technology in the commercial foodservice market.

This is what the RAC Cooling Awards judges had to say:

“The very strong field in this category showed that the industry is keeping the bar high when it comes to innovation. Despite a strong showing from the Geoscart system, judges gave the top award to the Air-cell cabinet, which sets out to provide an equally efficient alternative to putting doors on cabinets and so could turn out to change cabinet design.

“The principle of the air-cell is to retain the consumer-friendliness (and therefore retail-friendliness) of the open multi-deck cabinet but to tackle the age-old problems of cold-air spillage and cold aisle syndrome.

“Traditional cabinets use an air curtain at the front and additional air flow at the back panel, yet struggle to contain all the cold air within the cabinet. Instead of a cabinet-sized air flow cycle, the air-cell cabinet uses several smaller air flow managed cells (the prototype 1,250 mm cabinet has three), each with its own low velocity air curtain.

“The shorter air cycle means no need for back panel flow - and thus no cold air spillout - and the low velocity of the curtain saves energy and produces a more stable temperature. On trial, the Air-cell cabinet has used 20 per cent less energy than conventional open cabinets, but the partners expect this to rise to 40 per cent with further development.

"Truly innovative," said judges.
